right, i thought i'd get the ball rolling with the crapper!
we wanted to have all of our waste recycled naturally rather than being shipped off to a processing plant somewhere and being labelled 'hazardous waste' when, in fact, it's valuable fertiliser and food for a whole host of other critters, bacterias and essential for the ongoing health of this land.
so, we followed the basic principles of the jenkins humanure toilet as layed out in the book: 'peak oil survival' by aric mcbay.
the full book: 'the humanure handbook' by joseph jenkins is available free online here: http://weblife.org/humanure/default.html and definitely worth the read!
we put the toilet in the old bread oven which needs to be taken down and rebuilt at a future date and is perfect for the loo until then.
bread oven:
we bascially built a box with a hole in it to use as the toilet. we then put a metal bucket underneath and a lid on top. we empty the bucket roughly once a week and the box keeps the flies out. after using the toilet we 'flush' by adding roughage in the form of sawdust, ashes, soil etc... which stops any smells from escaping and keep the whole thing dry and clean.
the toilet:

and.....it works really well!
cheers, gairy.
